The question should be, what is it not good for.
I have personally never thought about using this spice until getting educated with IIN and researching holistic alternatives to medicine. Since inflammation is one cause of chronic disease as well as aches and pains in our body, this can prove to be beneficial. Its main ingredient is curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory effects and has strong antioxidants. Using alone as a spice has minimal absorption into the body but combining it with pepper helps to enhance absorption because of an ingredient in pepper called piperine.
Studies have shown that curcumin can aid in the death of cancer cells, reduce blood vessel growth in tumors and reduce the spread of certain cancers. Other benefits may include both brain health and heart health. For these reasons alone, I use turmeric in addition to pepper every day, almost on everything I eat. This spice can also be found in a supplement form. As with any spice, large amounts could affect your digestion so just be aware of how you’re feeling.
I don’t feel like Tumeric has a taste, however, I know people that have said they don’t like the taste of it, which may be another reason to use it in supplement form. This spice is orange in color and yes, it turns everything YELLOW!! I am always reminded of that after I touch my white cabinets…..oops!! Thankfully it’s never permanent!
So enjoy your spices and just know there are many spices and herbs that have natural and medicinal properties. This is just one of many!
